About Us

Since its introduction at WGI World Championships in 2014, the winds division has provided opportunities for wind players across America to participate in the winter pageantry arts alongside their percussion and colorguard counterparts. In the decade that this division has existed, without a winds group at your school, there hasn’t been an ensemble you could join within a 100+ mile radius from the Middle Tennessee area. That ends today. Obsidian Winds is proud to announce its inaugural season for 2025 in Independent A Class. Obsidian Winds will be competing in both the SCGC Circuit regionally and WGI Circuit nationally, culminating in Winds and Percussion World Championship Weekend in Dayton, Ohio this April.

OUR STORY

For nearly two decades, James, Nate, and Cayce have been collaborating together in the marching arts in one way or another. When WGI announced the formation of their Winds division, it caught their eye. Nate spent a season marching with Rhythm X Winds in their second competitive season, and the three of them designed and instructed Scholastic groups that attended WGI Winds World Championships on multiple occasions. At that point, they were sold. The Winds activity had enormous potential, and because it was still in its relative infancy, anyone and everyone had the opportunity to step in and make their mark.

After years of discussion and planning, it was clear that the time had come. Obsidian Winds was formed in the fall of 2024 with one goal in mind: Provide opportunities for young people in the Middle Tennessee area and the Mid-South as a whole to be able to take part in this amazing activity.
